The controversy surrounding Peanut the squirrel centers on its confiscation and euthanization by New York State officials. Peanut, a pet squirrel owned by Mark and Daniela Longo, gained a massive following on social media for its playful antics and life at the Longos’ animal sanctuary. The incident occurred after the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (NYDEC) seized Peanut, citing concerns about illegal wildlife ownership and potential public health risks.

The situation escalated when Peanut allegedly bit an investigator, leading authorities to euthanize both Peanut and Fred, a raccoon also living at the sanctuary. Officials justified this action by stating the need to test the animals for rabies. However, the Longos and their supporters argued that the animals could have been quarantined instead of euthanized, calling the actions unnecessary and cruel.

The case has sparked widespread outrage online, with fans expressing their grief and anger over the perceived government overreach. The hashtag #PeanutTheSquirrel trended across platforms like TikTok and X (formerly Twitter), where many shared tributes and criticisms of the decision.

This controversy has ignited debates on wildlife ownership, animal rights, and the handling of public health concerns. While supporters continue to demand justice for Peanut, authorities maintain their stance on prioritizing safety and compliance with wildlife regulations.
