K-pop Singer Taeil Departs from NCT Amid Allegations of Sexual Misconduct, Agency Confirms

 


SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korean singer Taeil has officially exited the popular K-pop group NCT following allegations of involvement in an unspecified sexual crime, according to a statement released by his agency on Wednesday.

The announcement came from SM Entertainment, Taeil's management label, through a post on X (formerly known as Twitter). The statement revealed that Taeil, a member of the globally renowned boy band, would be leaving the group after being "accused in a criminal case related to a sexual crime." However, the specific details of the alleged crime were not disclosed.

Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, SM Entertainment stated, "We recognized the seriousness of the issue, and we have decided that Taeil can no longer continue team activities. After discussions with Taeil, it has been agreed that he will depart from the group." The agency also noted that Taeil is fully cooperating with the ongoing police investigation.

Taeil was an integral part of NCT, or Neo Culture Technology, a widely popular South Korean boy band that debuted in 2016. The group, known for its innovative approach to music, comprises over two dozen members who are divided into several subunits, including NCT 127, NCT Dream, and NCT U. Taeil had been actively participating in activities with NCT 127, one of the subunits known for its experimental music that blends various genres. The group has achieved international acclaim, with several releases making their way onto Billboard charts.



SM Entertainment’s announcement quickly gained widespread attention, with the statement amassing over 45.7 million views within just a few hours of being posted.

As of now, the specific details of the criminal case remain unverified, and the police have declined to comment further on the matter.

K-pop, which originated in South Korea, is a fusion of pop, R&B, and hip-hop sounds influenced by Western music, combined with cultural elements unique to South Korea. The genre has evolved into a global sensation, particularly gaining momentum with the success of groups like BTS in the late 2010s.
